Halifax Home Insurance saw huge 2020 increase in storm and flood claims

In 2020, Halifax Home Insurance experienced a 177% increase in storm claims and a 90% increase in flood claims compared to 2019.

In the early part of last year as Storms Ciara and Brendan swept the country, Halifax Home Insurance said claims surged by 311% in January and 1,282% in February compared to 2019. It said Flood claims also increased by 9,650% between February 2019 and 2020.

Tim Downes, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: “We haven’t yet seen temperatures plummet to Siberian levels like during the Beast from the East, but theMet Office has issued warnings, and Storm Christoph recently led to flooding across much of the country.

“We know that homes are particularly at risk of storm damage in the winter months and the cost of repairs can be higher than people expect.

“With more of us spending time at home, now is the time to carry out essential checks on your property and make sure you have the right level of insurance.”
