ABI issues statement on Spain travel insurance

Following the Government's decision to change travel guidance for Spain, the ABI has said that passengers who booked their trip or took out cover after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic may not be covered for the disruption or any cancellations.

The news this weekend that the popular holiday destination was removed from the travel corridors 'safe list' and that people returning to the UK from Spain would be subject to a 14-day quarantine was met with anger from passengers, travel companies and airlines, despite the Government having previously stated that it would only keep travel corridors open with countries with low rates of infection.

The ABI said: "If you were already in the country when the advice changed then your insurance is likely to continue to cover you until you return home. Customers looking to change or cancel their travel plans should speak with the airline provider, tour operator or travel agent in the first instance.

"If you booked your trip or took out your travel insurance after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, you may not be covered for travel disruption or cancellation. In either circumstance, we’d advise checking with your insurer.”
