A footballer was ordered to pay over £6,000 in legal costs after a court found he made a dishonest claim for whiplash following a car accident.
Specialist insurance law firm, Horwich Farrelly, working on behalf of managing general agent Tansar, who provide a range of specialist UK insurance products underwritten by Gefion Insurance, proved in court the claim made by Richard Allen was fundamentally dishonest.
Allen claimed he was injured for 11 months. But he continued to play over 30 matches for two clubs in that period of time, Salford City FC followed by Longridge Town FC. In defence, Allen said he self-medicated with steroids to hide his injuries as football was his sole source of income.
Fraud partner and Tansar client account manager at Horwich Farrelly, Jared Mallinson, said the case demonstrates the law firm would to fight unmeritorious claims no matter the background of the claimant.
“The claim once again proves that dishonest claimants come in all shapes and sizes, no matter age, profession or where they live,” he added. “The court's decision to find Allen fundamentally dishonest is a red card to any would-be insurance cheat that they will be caught and face a suitable punishment.”
Head of claims at Tansar, Neil Blaney added: “We are delighted with the outcome of this case, it is testament to our investigation of any claim that we believe to be potentially dishonest and to the good work and strong defence entered by Horwich Farrelly.”
Chief claims director at Gefion Insurance, Russell Pollard said the firm takes a robust approach to identifying and investigating suspected fraudulent claims.
“It is our moral obligation to prevent premiums paid by honest paying policyholders being used to pay dishonest claimants,” he added.
