Paymentshield data shows January storms driving claims

In January 2025, storms Goretti, Ingrid and Chandra combined to cause storm damage that saw the month account for almost three-quarters (73%) of total storm damage claims for the entire year, according to Paymentshield. The insurance provider said that in 2024, January was also a peak month for storm damage, accounting for 46% of the year’s total.

Paymentshield said the average cost of storm damage claims in 2025 was £1,242. This compared to £1,011 in 2021 and £588 in 2017.

The data showed that Scotland was the highest claims region for storm damage in both 2025 and 2024, followed by the North West and South East of England.

Louise Pengelly, associate director at Paymentshield, said: “Our claims data reveals just how concentrated and costly storm damage has become, particularly during the winter months.

“With Paymentshield data highlighting that the average storm claim now exceeds £1,200, homeowners without adequate cover could be left facing significant repair bills, something advisers are well placed to draw out when discussing protection needs.”
