Perils provides updated loss estimate for Storm Goretti

Catastrophe insurance data provider Perils has updated its loss estimate for Storm Goretti to £417m. This is up by £10m on the initial figure given in the weeks after the January windstorm hit southwestern England. The estimate covers motor and property insurance losses.

Luzi Hitz, product manager at Perils, said: “At this stage, it is relatively safe to conclude that the 2025/26 European windstorm season has ended. Like the previous season, the losses experienced were relatively benign, with only two moderately impactful windstorms – Goretti and Nils – exceeding our loss capturing threshold of €300m [£261m] for any one country or €500m [£435m] for a Europewide event.”

He added: “While the impact of this season on the re/insurance industry has been more limited, recent history shows that European windstorm seasons can be considerably more severe. For example, the 2023/24 season witnessed Windstorm Ciaran which generated insured losses of €2,067m [£1,800m] at the time, while the 2021/22 season saw a storm series with Dudley, Eunice and Franklin (also known as Ylenia, Zeynep and Antonia) generating a combined loss of €3,851m [£3,355m].”
