LexisNexis reports ageing UK motor fleet

Research from LexisNexis shows that the average age of vehicles on UK roads is rising while their value is falling. It says the average age of a vehicle has risen from 10 years in H2 2023 to around 10 years and 5 months in H2 2025. Over the same timeframe, average values have dropped by almost £1,000 to approximately £10,000.

The data comes from the LexisNexis Insurance Demand Meter UK, which is a biannual analysis of the market. LexisNexis suggests older vehicles present a potentially less predictable risk profile to underwriters due to their broader and less consistent mix of ADAS equipment.

The analysis also highlights a drop in switching activity and says that in Q4 2025, 21% of policyholders switched provider – the lowest level recorded since Q1 2023.

Tom Lawrie-Fussey, associate vice president of insurance product management, UK and Ireland, at LexisNexis Risk Solutions, said: “The market is insuring older cars with depreciating values. Knowing the status, maintenance history and real-time value of these vehicles is central to fair policy pricing and customer transparency throughout the insurance claims process.”
