Technology related claims now account for 4.6% of all travel insurance claims and have an average value of £244. The data from insurtech provider Gigasure shows that a quarter (24.6%) of all technology related travel claims now involve mobile phones.
Gigasure says travellers carry an array of devices including laptops, phones, tablets and power banks. It says the increased prevalence of lithium batteries also carries significant risk implications for the wider aviation market.
Gary Murphy, travel insurance expert at Gigasure, said: “Phones now play such an important role in our holidays, from storing boarding passes and booking information to navigating unfamiliar destinations, that losing one can cause significant disruption as well as an unexpected expense.
“With a quarter of technology related claims involving mobile phones, we're encouraging holidaymakers to think about their phone as one of their most valuable possessions.”
Ernesto Suarez, who previously founded Halo Insurance Services, established managing general agent Gigasure at the end of 2024. In addition to travel, it offers backpackers and car hire excess insurance.
