Winter sports claims costs on the up – Aviva

Research from Aviva has found that the most common winter sports injury for the 2024/25 season was a broken leg and that the most expensive was a pelvic injury, for which the average cost for medical treatment was £8,354. Aviva said medical assistance costs had increased across the board, with the exception of Bulgaria. Compared to the 2022/23 season, it said medical assistance costs in the US were up by 55%.

James Devereux, travel manager at Aviva, said: “November marks the start of winter sports season and it’s a time many will look forward to all-year round… While no one wants to think about the worst-case scenario, medical costs can be extremely high in some countries – such as the US – quickly reaching tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds.”

Aviva found that the US and Andorra with a figure of £10,648, topped the list for the average medical assistance claim cost for winter sports injuries. The least expensive was Bulgaria at £710.
