Co-op bolsters travel offering

Co-op Insurance has relaxed the underwriting criteria on its travel insurance to extend cover to people waiting for a diagnosis for conditions such as ADHD or autism. It will also cover people who are waiting for the results of medical tests. However, cover is excluded for cancellation, cutting a trip short and medical emergency expenses relating to the condition.

Co-op Insurance said conditions such as ADHD, autism, heart conditions, epilepsy and cancer often had lengthy waiting lists for diagnosis or involved long-running health assessments.

Charles Offord, managing director of Co-op Insurance, said: “As part of Co-op’s broader commitment to social value and inclusivity, we are proud to make an insurance policy available that responds to the needs of the communities we serve and our member-owners.

“Shaped by colleague and member feedback, this product will increase access to travel insurance and enable more people to experience peace of mind whilst travelling. We understand how vital it is for individuals with undiagnosed conditions to have the same opportunities to travel without fear of doing so without adequate cover or protection.”

Figures from charity ADHD UK show that people can wait for up to 10 years for a diagnosis.

Henry Shelford, CEO of ADHD UK, said: "Getting travel insurance while on a medical waitlist is a challenging, complex process as many providers would prohibit you from accessing travel cover with an unconfirmed health status. Anything that simplifies the process and allows people to relax when on holiday has to be celebrated.”
