CMA opens merger inquiry into Aviva’s Direct Line deal

The Competition and Markets Authority has opened an inquiry into Aviva plc’s proposed acquisition of Direct Line Insurance Group plc. The CMA is inviting comments until 29th May as to whether the deal will lead to reduced competition in any UK market for goods or services. It will decide if it is going to refer the deal for additional scrutiny by 10th July 2025.

The CMA stated: “The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) hereby gives notice pursuant to section 96(2A) of the Enterprise Act 2002 (the Act) that the merger notice provided by Aviva plc (Aviva) and Direct Line Insurance Group plc (Direct Line) in relation to the anticipated acquisition by Aviva of Direct Line (the Merger) meets the requirements of section 96(2) of the Act.”
